dread broadcasting corporation
Two things happened yesterday that coincided in an interesting way. The first was reading an article in the FT about podcasting - something I know zilch about. The second was sorting out some junk in the garage and finding a box of old cassette tapes which included some recordings of DBC ( Dread Broadcasting Corporation ) from the early 1980s.
Rebel Radio or DBC was Britain’s first Black radio station, ‘illegally’ broadcasting on a Friday night a mixture of soca, soul, ska and reggae. It was, and remains so almost 25 years later, the most innovative, funny and enjoyable radio station that the UK has ever heard. Eventually it was closed down by the constant activities of the ‘authorities’ who decide what can and cannot be broadcast.
Interesting stuff because while we have the ‘freedom’ of the internet, the powers that be still insist that ‘they’ control the airwaves and television in a way that denies the vast majority of people any access or control whatsoever.
Digitize the tapes and we can P2P them easily. No copyright issues? There is a huge audience. A lot easier than broadcasting too.
