the war on stupidity

A few weeks ago I took this photograph at Liverpool St station. I was going to make some smart comment about how television and advertising are slowly beginning to dominate public space, providing a relentless blanket of consumerism, intruding into our very pysche, making us feel this is a normal and inevitable state of affairs. But lo, 15 seconds after the camera flash occured I was stopped by someone in a grubby yellow flourescent waistcoat; ‘you’re not allowed to take photographs here’.
‘Why’s that then?’
‘Terrorist threats’
‘I’m not being funny, but do many people take photographs here?’
‘you’re the eigth person I’ve caught today’
‘Can you show me where it says I can’t take photos here?’
‘No’
‘So its not a written rule? Who do I need to query this with?’
‘Ken Livingstone’
‘And how do I get in touch with him?’
‘His address is on the internet’
‘And what if I don’t have access to the internet?’
‘Look stop taking photos…’
And on and on. Actually we had quite a good discussion about the war on terrorism and the erosion of civil liberties. So when I got the chance I had a look on the internet for Liverpool Street station.
