And talking of quality, great pleasure was derived this morning from cancelling SKY TV. It feels like liberation from a technology which could be fantastic - universal, multiple channel TV - but which in fact is unmitigated cr*p.

The frequency and length of the adverts means that an hour or so of watching any of the channels creates an emotion akin to having spent a week without sleep in a shopping mall. It’s puzzling why few, if any of the adverts, despite their frequency, stick in the mind. But the relentless message is - buy; consume; purchase.

Cancelling Sky? Well, there’s the obligatory endless telephone queues going round in circles until finally - a human voice! At first they refused to register that anyone might have had enough of Murdoch’s greed and his rotten impact on popular culture. When it was explained that all the programmes are crap the voice said ‘ you mean you have problems with the picture?’ This is smarter than you think. How do you programme a real person to refuse to hear clear messages so they can continue to try and sell you something you clearly don’t want? A criticism of Sky can’t possibly be about how dire it is - only how poor your TV set is in showing the pictures.

And as for the 0870 numbers…in these days of internet telephony do we really need to be further ripped off at every turn with this?
