Implementation has got to be the hardest part of improving information management through the use of standards. At least half the reason why organisations buy large systems is because it looks as if they’ve done something to address the underlying issues. Rather than concentrate on some small scale - but probably enormously contentious - change, a new system will be procured.

Whether this is the answer or not is another thing; but if enough consultants have been brought in and enough money has been spent, who will dare say the king hath no clothes?

At a meeting in London yesterday, this formula was put forward to achieve change;

- first of all scare them, then a bit of comms (tell them) and then show them -the benefits. Brilliant!

As for change - well the picture above shows the Royal Exchange, established in 1566. The current building is from 1842. Behind this is the much more recent Gherkin and Tower 42. Underneath these roads are fibre optic networks and high speed links to the world’s financial centres. Yep, the world certainly changes - but the process is not simply technological determinism.
