technology and culture
I seem to have come across references recently about the lack of interesting films on the TV. I would definetly second that. Where are films like ‘Man is not a Bird’, the Czech new wave on so on. But worse.
Even when films are put on the TV, they are ruined by advertising. Round a friends house on Friday evening watching Klute and ever fifteen or twenty minutes, another five minute round of adverts. Oh yeah, the really clever adverts so at first you’re not sure if it’s part of the film or not; wow, but a brainy person dreamed that up. Not.
Splitting a film up with adverts seems such a heresy to me; like sticking a McDonalds logo on the Mona Lisa (oh no, someone will think that’s a good idea). But that’s where the money is. More is spent on advertising in the west than is spent on education and schools in whole continents such as Africa.
