Google and contemporary capitalism
I note from yesterday’s FT that Bill Clinton is hosting the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. Tony Blair is speaking, as are very powerful people from CISCO and Starbucks. Bono is calling on people to pray for Burma.
This is nauseating.
Also from the FT this week, the annual amount spent on advertising in the USA is close to $300 billion. I would presume enough to pay for crystal clear germ free water for everyone in the ‘developing’ (or maybe ‘un-developing’) countries. It might even cover access to schools and medicines.
So paranoid as these businesses that have this insatiable greed to sell us things that they are pouring huge resources into working out how to ‘personalise’ advertising to internet users. Clicks will be tracked; online shopping habits collated and analysed; visits to websites recorded and the paths through the internet captured. Words analysed in emails so that adverts can be targetted to you, the individual, specific consumer.
