I read somewhere yesterday of a group of academics that have written to the government asking them not to go ahead with identity cards…

….but the government will proceed; billions of pounds will be spent and I will bet now that it doesn’t work and there will be disaster after disaster as a result.

I’m sure there are all sorts of complicated forces at work here, but one of the dominant ones seems to be sheer stupidity.
