Totally by accident this morning I somehow opened up the Toshiba Console management window (I pressed the wrong button on the keyboard). Here, quite plain to see is a picture of a mouse. I have switched off the dual pointing feature (this is the touchpad part of the keyboard). Mouse and cursor now both doing very well.
